Tulips as we all are 2 for solo violin and video. Music and video by Martha-Maria Mitu.
Original composition performed by Martha-Maria Mitu at the Southbank Centre, Purcell Room. This piece is part of a growing collection of works inspired by Romanian folk music, under the title Tulips as we all are.
Tulips as we all are 2 is meant to depict moments of play, joy, and the simple feeling of just being. The music is a condensed version of improvisations on folk-inspired tunes and sounds, the video features the composer’s home in London and its surrounding area – the Thames Barrier. The mosaic featured in the video, with its playful, ‘folky’ aesthetic symbolises a cross between Martha-Maria’s native Romanian culture, and that of her current home in England: a happy, nostalgic event of discovering the artwork on her regular walks along the River Thames.

This composition, set to an original poem of the same name, draws its inspiration from Lake Sarnen, a lake found near one of the composer’s former homes in Switzerland.
‘One night, walking toward the lake along a pathway lit only by the full moon, I almost stepped into the water, not able to understand where the water’s still surface began - where it reflected the clouds, the moon, and the mountains - and everything became overwhelmingly beautiful.’
